GCG continues to expand IP portfolio16.09.2011

The Company has continued to reinforce its considerable portfolio of key intellectual property. These grants will involve GCG's core P Zero patent, the technology that 'balances' the curing distortion in the manufacture of carbon fibre laminates. This distortion has been prevalent throughout the entire history of carbon fibre manufacturing and it occurs because the carbon fibres and the polymer used in the process have thermal properties which cause them to contract at different rates during curing, causing the distortion. GCG's technology neutralises this effect by simply combining auxetic fibres alongside the carbon fibres in a combination that 'balances' the structure.
The P Zero patent has been approved for grant in both Russia and the US, which will provide tremendous robustness to the global control of this technology. GCG also received approval for a European grant for ductile metal foam.

Team Indian Ocean 3100 finished
12.07.2011

After 76 days at sea and a total of 3,398 miles, Team Indian Ocean 3100 crossed the finish line in Mauritius at 1pm (GMT) on 8th July 2011. The four rowers, traversing the Indian Ocean, had been hoping to beat the current world record of 68 days, but after battling strong weather systems and equipment failure, the record slipped from their grasp.
On behalf of Cambridge Cognition, the four have been completing a CANTAB assessment on a weekly basis, both before and during the expedition, and their results will be compared against control subjects to investigate the effects of extreme physical and mental fatigue on cognitive performance. It is believed that this may be the first experiment of its kind, and will give a unique insight into how the brain reacts under these circumstances.

30.11.2010

enverdis GmbH from Jena was again able to arouse great interest by presenting its products CARDIOLOGIC EXPLORER and VASCULAR EXPLORER at the MEDICA trade show. Special attention was recently drawn to CARDIOGONIOMETRY. Many countries need a faster diagnostic for the detection of heart attacks, which may be overlooked while using the normal ECG. At the MEDICA existent merchant connections could be intensified and new prospects for the distribution of enverdis products were gained.
Faster detection of myocardial infarctions
19.11.2010
(lifepr) Berlin, 5 October 2010 Every day across the nation, people with acute chest pain are admitted to hospitals. When a myocardial infarction is suspected, the proper diagnosis may be a life-saving one. Yet, currently used diagnostics show potential gaps in accuracy. Now, there is a new, easy-to-use diagnostic method that allows primary-care physicians to detect potential myocardial infarctions faster in outpatient settings. Cardiologists at the Friedenau POLIKUM Health Centre are the first to use this novel ECG unit equipped with cardiogoniometry (CGM) in an outpatient setting in the Berlin metropolis. Cardiogoniometry is a method that produces a spatiotemporal analysis of ECG data. The device is called the CARDIOLOGIC EXPLORER and operates with five electrodes in an orthogonal system orientated along the heart's axis. Without stress for the patients, the data are recorded and automatically analysed within 12 seconds. Initial study results indicate that CGM is a readily available, supplemental method for early diagnosis of acute chest pain and myocardial infarctions.

A novel ECG-based method can help save more lives
19.11.2010

Bad Segeberg, 8 October 2010 The best chances to survive a myocardial infarction is when diagnosis is performed as fast and as early as possible, enabling proper treatment to be initiated promptly. Up until now, ECG represented the best method for such fast and early diagnosis. According to Prof. Gert Richardt, Medical Director at the Heart Centre in Bad Segeberg, however, the classical ECG recorder, an electrical cardiograph, can only detect around 30% of all myocardial infarctions. Even state-of-the-art blood tests for myocardial infarction may not reveal problems until after a delay of up to several hours.
CGM is an innovative new type of electrocardiograph that performs all the necessary measurements within a few seconds and analyses them automatically on a mobile computer.
Just recently, Richardt and his team together with the other heart centres involved in this nationwide study presented their results at the Cardiology Congress in Stockholm. Now, speculation has been sparked that CGM may revolutionise inpatient and outpatient settings. Richardt: 'I could imagine that CGM will offer physicians in private practice and primary care an important decision-making tool. That is the setting where fast-track decisions are made as to whether a patient needs to be admitted to hospital directly in order to receive the proper care.' In the emergency sector, he could also imagine that CGM would enable better diagnostics for cardiological emergencies. Thereby, cardiac emergency patients could be transferred more effectively to the appropriate clinic.

enverdis successful at Stockholm conference
03.09.2010

Cardiogoniometry identifies quickly and secure those heart attacks that can be easily overlooked while applying ordinary methods.
enverdis (Jena) presented the final results of CGM@ACS research to a large audience from all over Europe during the Congress of the European Society of Cardiogoniometry. The participating expert group confirmed that the CGM identifies more patients with acute coronary syndrome than such contemporary widespread methods as stress free ECG and Troponin. The CGM is safer, faster, cost effective and it can be used anywhere. The results of stress MRT and CGM are strongly correlated. More information about the status of patients can be gained from spacial derivatives. This information allows to make a quick decision about further steps that will be taken. The use of CGM alsoat GPs leads to a quicker transfer of the patient into the hospital. So, it is possible to help earlier many patients which nowadays die on the way to the hospital. Permanent damage from a too late implemented therapy will be avoided.

CANTAB memory test puts women in front
15.07.2010

As widely reported in press throughout the world, Scientists at Cambridge University have recently demonstrated a clear link between factors such as sex and education level and memory function, using the CANTAB Paired Associates Learning technique.
CANTAB is the world's leading cognitive testing battery and is developed and marketed by Cambridge Cognition Limited. The computerised neuropsychological tests in CANTAB are outstandingly sensitive and extensively validated, with a bibliography of over 600 peer-reviewed journal papers.
The study carried out a number of memory tests on almost 4,500 men and women from East Anglia and the cognitive and physical performance of each participant, currently aged between 48 and 90 years, was assessed.
The preliminary results gave a strong indication that the memories of women function better than men, with women making an average of 5.9% fewer errors on a specific test of memory than men. This clear difference remains unchanged regardless of age.
Dr Andrew Blackwell, who led the research, is Chief Scientific Officer at Cambridge Cognition and Honorary Visiting Research Associate at the University of Cambridge Department of Psychiatry.
He commented:
Given the size of the sample and the objective method of assessment, it is likely that this result is a reliable indication this form of memory is generally better in women than men. We have looked at smaller datasets in younger people; remarkably, some similar gender differences seem to be observable even in children. Using these data, we can determine whether or not an individual's memory function is normal or not for people of their age, sex and education level. A body of scientific literature has demonstrated that women typically outperform men on test of verbal function, whereas men tend to outperform women on tasks of spatial function. However, in this study, we used a measure of memory that is spatial and women consistently outperformed men. There are many possible explanations for this, including both neurobiological and environmental differences.
The plan is to conduct further research to ascertain exactly what factors influence memory.
Based in Cambridge, England, and Cambridge, Massachusetts, Cambridge Cognition supplies its products and services to the pharmaceutical industry and academic researchers across the globe.
